The billionaire looked toward the Air Marshal.

Then the passengers.

Then the cameras.

The woman continued.

“That is information.”

“And tomorrow morning I will decide what it means.”

The Air Marshal gestured.

“Sir, turn around.”

The billionaire looked at him.

“What?”

“I’m restraining you pending coordination with the captain and federal authorities at destination.”

The billionaire laughed once.

“No.”

The Air Marshal’s expression changed.

“This is not optional.”

“You put handcuffs on me and I will own you.”

The Air Marshal said:

“No, sir.”

“You won’t.”

The billionaire looked around desperately.

His social power had worked his entire adult life because everyone else believed in it too.

Now he had entered a situation where the person nearest him was required to care about procedure more than reputation.

He hated it.

He stepped backward.

The Air Marshal moved with him.

“Do not resist.”

The billionaire pointed toward the woman.

“This is because of her.”

The Air Marshal answered:

“This is because I watched you intentionally pour a scalding beverage onto a passenger and then physically shove her.”

“She provoked me.”

“Turn around.”

“She challenged me.”

“Turn around.”

“She—”

“Now.”

The billionaire stopped.

His shoulders dropped.

Then he turned.

The click of restraints sounded impossibly loud.

The flight attendant stared at the floor.

Several passengers kept filming.

The Black woman looked away.

She did not enjoy the sound.

That surprised her.

Part of her had imagined, in the first burning seconds after the coffee hit, that she would feel satisfaction watching him lose control.

She did not.

Mostly she felt pain.

Exhaustion.

And disappointment that it had required federal restraints before the cabin finally became safe.

The Air Marshal moved the billionaire to a secured seat several rows away.

The flight attendant returned with cold compresses, sterile towels, and the onboard medical kit.

A physician traveling in business class volunteered.

The Black woman allowed him to examine the injury.

“First-degree in most areas.”

He looked closer.

“Possibly superficial second-degree on the upper thigh.”

“Do you need stronger pain relief?”

“No.”

“You should take something.”

“I will.”

The doctor looked toward her.

“You don’t have to prove anything.”

She stared.

Then smiled faintly.

“That obvious?”

“A little.”

She accepted medication.

The flight attendant crouched beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

The woman looked toward her.

“You did not pour the coffee.”

“No.”

“But I froze.”

The attendant’s eyes filled.

“I knew who he was.”

The woman waited.

“He complains.”

“People get written up.”

“He has executives’ personal numbers.”

“Every time he boards, we get a note saying priority attention.”

The woman’s expression changed.

“What note?”

The attendant realized she had said too much.

The woman asked:
