Nobody standing there knew that she had spent the previous fourteen years learning exactly what to do when people mistook composure for weakness.
She asked quietly, “You’re certain that’s how you want to begin a billion-dollar partnership?”
That brought another laugh.
This one clearer.
The CEO looked toward the men seated behind him, enjoying the reaction.
“Partnership?”
He turned back.
“Your job is to deliver the paperwork.”
The Black woman did not move.
The CEO continued.
“My board will discuss the partnership with whoever actually has authority to negotiate it.”
A few executives exchanged glances.
One woman near the far end stopped smiling.
The Black woman rested the burgundy portfolio on the table.
“I see.”
The CEO reached for it before she could open it.
He pulled it toward himself.
She looked at his hand.
“Don’t.”
The word was soft.
That irritated him more than if she had shouted.
His expression tightened.
“Excuse me?”
“That contains confidential documents belonging to my investment group.”
He gave a dismissive laugh.
“And you brought them into my boardroom.”
“They remain confidential.”
The CEO lifted the portfolio.
Then, with a sharp movement, threw it down the length of the table.
The folder struck the polished wood and opened.
Unsigned agreements slid across the surface.
Several pages floated onto the carpet.
The room went still.
The CFO sitting three seats away looked horrified.
The CEO pointed toward an empty chair.
“Sit down.”
The Black woman looked at the scattered documents.
Then at him.
He continued.
“When the people actually funding this acquisition arrive, you can take notes.”
A board member laughed again.
It was nervous this time.
The Black woman reached into the pocket of her portfolio case and removed her phone.
The CEO smiled.
“Calling your boss?”
She tapped the screen once.
“No.”
The CFO looked toward the wall display.
Something changed.
The large green line representing committed capital disappeared.
For one second nobody understood what they were seeing.
Then the acquisition model refreshed.
A red banner appeared across the screen.
ANCHOR CAPITAL COMMITMENT: WITHDRAWN
The CFO stood so quickly his chair rolled backward.
“What the hell?”
The CEO turned toward the display.
