The fundraiser nevertheless exceeded its scholarship target. Guests contributed after hearing students speak about their training. Nobody needed an extravagant imported ingredient to understand why the program mattered. At the end, the chairwoman stood beneath the calligraphy and thanked the employees who had adapted the menu. They received a longer round of applause than the speeches.
When the room emptied, the young waitress from the original confrontation found the chairwoman behind the service counter. 'I used to think you needed to be loud to stand up to men like that,' she said.
The chairwoman smiled wearily. 'Sometimes you need to be loud. Sometimes you need to keep working and let the record catch up.'
The employee looked down. 'I still feel angry about the dinner.'
'So do I.'
The frank answer surprised her. The chairwoman continued, 'Being calm doesn't mean nothing hurts. It means choosing what to do with the hurt.'
The waitress nodded slowly. 'I'd like to study Mandarin.'
The chairwoman looked up. 'For your work?'
'Partly. Mostly because I want to. I hate that I now associate the language with that man's voice.'
The chairwoman's expression softened. 'Then let's find you teachers who will give you a very different experience of it.'
The employee smiled through sudden tears. 'Thank you.'
The chairwoman touched her shoulder. 'You don't need to be fluent to deserve respect here. But if you want to learn, we'll support you.'
On Monday, a courier delivered a formal letter threatening action under the preliminary cost-sharing agreement. The letter alleged that her company had interfered with a promising transaction and incurred expenses for the hotel group and its affiliates. Counsel reviewed the claim and identified several unsupported assumptions. They prepared a measured response preserving the company's rights and rejecting the idea that a shareholder had to approve an altered contract simply because negotiations had progressed.
A more dangerous development followed. The chief finance director, already under scrutiny, announced that a short-term borrowing facility might be called due. His memo described 'material uncertainty' surrounding the acquisition and the fundraiser incident. The chairwoman's interim accountants checked the loan documents. The facility remained current; there was no automatic acceleration based on a disputed internet clip or a declined proposal. But the director's exaggerated language could alarm lenders if distributed without clarification.
