The attorney adjusted his glasses. His eyes found the corporate name, the voting-interest schedule, and the identification of the controlling shareholder. He read the page again. Then he looked up at the woman.
'Chairwoman?' he asked quietly.
The billionaire turned sharply. 'What did you say?'
The attorney swallowed. 'She holds the controlling voting interest. Her consent is required before the acquisition can proceed.'
The young waitress remained standing in her emerald silk qipao. She was no longer simply the employee he had assumed he could threaten. She was the majority owner of the restaurant group he had traveled across the world to buy.
'You cannot be serious,' the billionaire whispered.
'I'm completely serious,' she answered. 'And before we discuss who owns this restaurant, I would like to know why your team submitted a revised contract that transfers our kitchen-training intellectual property to a company nobody has disclosed.'
The youngest executive looked up so quickly that his chair moved against the carpet. The property investor became still. The lawyer reached again for the document.
The billionaire stared at the waitress. He understood the first surprise. He did not yet understand the second. The wrong person had been humiliated in a room filled with witnesses, but someone at that table had also been caught attempting something much more consequential than a cruel insult.
She turned to the final page and rested one finger beside the blank signature line. 'I came tonight because I wanted to know whether the man negotiating for our company understood the values that built it,' she said. 'I also wanted to look him in the eye while asking about the missing schedule.'
'What missing schedule?' asked the operations director.
The waitress looked at him. 'The one attaching fourteen properties, three culinary archives, and a forty-year licensing option to a transaction represented to my board as a limited hotel partnership.'
Silence fell beneath the lanterns.
The property investor stopped smiling entirely.
That silence might have been the end of an ordinary business dinner. For the young woman, however, it was the beginning of an investigation she had already risked her company to pursue. To understand why she had dressed as a waitress in a room full of billionaires, it was necessary to understand a small family restaurant that had once occupied a narrow storefront in Queens.
