The reservation was made for two. The older man arrived without a large entourage, accompanied only by his daughter. His hair was almost entirely silver. He still wore an expensive suit and watch, but he spoke more quietly than he had three years earlier. When the host greeted him, he thanked her. When the server explained a dish, he listened rather than interrupting. His daughter noticed and gave him a small smile.

The service trainer was working that night. She recognized him immediately. For an instant, the old humiliation returned so vividly that she felt it in her stomach. Then she reminded herself that the dining room had policies, colleagues, and managers who would support her. She did not need to prove anything to him.

At the end of the meal, the older man asked whether he might speak to the service manager. The trainer approached with a colleague nearby. He stood from his chair, startling her. She stopped a comfortable distance away.

'I owe you an apology,' he said.

She remained quiet.

'The last time I was in this room, I insulted a server because I assumed her language and her position made her less worthy of respect. My daughter has reminded me how many people I hurt by behaving that way.'

He paused, then looked directly at the trainer. 'I understand that you were among the employees affected by how my group treated this restaurant. I'm sorry.'

The trainer considered his words. She did not have to forgive him. She did not have to say he had changed. Finally she replied, 'Thank you for acknowledging what happened. I hope you continue treating service workers respectfully everywhere you go.'

He nodded. 'I intend to.'

His daughter thanked the trainer for the meal. The older man paid the bill, left a gratuity according to the restaurant's usual system, and departed without asking to see the owner. Nobody applauded. Nobody filmed the encounter. It remained an ordinary conversation between people who had once occupied very different places in an ugly story.

The trainer told the chairwoman afterward. 'I don't know what to think.'

The chairwoman nodded. 'You don't have to decide tonight.'

'He seemed sincere.'

'He may have been.'

The trainer looked toward the entrance. 'I always thought I'd want to embarrass him if I saw him again.'

'Did you?'

'No. I wanted to finish my work and go home.'

The chairwoman smiled softly. 'That sounds like freedom.'

The trainer laughed, then wiped a tear from her cheek. 'Maybe it is.'
