The same sergeant whose disciplinary packet was inside the box.

The universe did not create irony often that perfect.

He accepted the call.

The younger officer riding with him was new to the district and knew nothing about the hearing scheduled the next morning.

They arrived.

The rest became video.

The unmarked sedan that arrived after the box was opened carried the deputy chief and an Internal Affairs lieutenant.

The deputy chief stepped out first.

He was a large man in his late fifties whose face displayed the rare expression of a leader already aware that his day had become much worse than scheduled.

The review counsel stood beside her black sedan.

The torn package lay open.

The sergeant stood several feet away.

The younger officer near the patrol SUV.

The deputy chief approached.

“Everybody stop.”

Nobody had been moving.

He looked at the sergeant.

Then the open box.

Then the counsel.

“Are you injured?”

“Wrist.”

“Anything else?”

“Shoulder.”

The sergeant interjected.

“She refused commands.”

The deputy chief did not look at him.

“Do not speak.”

The counsel saw the sergeant flinch.

The Internal Affairs lieutenant walked directly to the box.

“Has anything been removed?”

The sergeant answered:

“I opened the folder.”

The lieutenant looked at him.

“Anything taken?”

“No.”

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

The counsel said:

“He removed the top file and turned several pages.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“Photograph everything before touching.”

The younger officer finally spoke.

“Sir.”

The deputy chief turned.

“My body camera is running from arrival.”

The deputy chief looked almost relieved.

“Good.”

Then toward the sergeant.

“Yours?”

The sergeant touched his chest.

A small red light blinked.

“On.”

“From arrival?”

Pause.

“Yes.”

The counsel looked at him.

Something in her face changed.

She knew enough to hear hesitation.

The deputy chief noticed too.

“Internal Affairs will confirm.”

The sergeant’s jaw tightened.

The counsel bent slowly toward the grass to retrieve her phone.

The sergeant took one step.

The deputy chief said:

“Don’t.”

The sergeant stopped.

She picked up the phone.

Screen scratched.

Still functional.

The security application remained open.
