The woman’s shoulder struck the side of her black sedan.

The cardboard box slipped.

She caught it with her other hand.

Her red mouth tightened.

The younger officer spoke again.

“Sergeant, she’s not pulling away.”

“I know what resisting looks like.”

The woman looked toward him.

“Then apparently you also know what compliance looks like and are ignoring it.”

That did it.

The sergeant grabbed the box.

She held on.

“Let go.”

“No.”

His eyebrows rose.

“No?”

“This is private legal material.”

“You’re being investigated for theft.”

“That does not give you permission to destroy sealed legal correspondence.”

He jerked the box.

She maintained her grip.

He yanked harder.

One of the top corners tore.

The sound of ripping cardboard seemed unnaturally loud.

Across the street, a woman standing beside a stroller stopped walking.

A landscaping worker near the next house lowered his hedge trimmer.

The sergeant finally ripped the box free.

The woman’s shoulder hit the car again.

The younger officer moved forward.

“That’s enough.”

The sergeant spun.

“Back up.”

The younger officer froze.

The Black woman looked at him.

He looked ashamed almost immediately.

The sergeant threw the package onto the sedan’s hood.

The cardboard struck the polished black paint and slid several inches.

The woman’s eyes followed it.

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Calculation.

“Do not open that.”

The sergeant laughed once.

“You keep giving orders.”

“I’m warning you.”

“About what?”

“That package is not consumer merchandise.”

“Then you won’t mind if I confirm that.”

“I mind very much.”

He reached for the tape.

The woman’s voice lowered.

“If you open it, you are creating a new problem.”

The sergeant leaned closer.

“You already are the problem.”

Then he ripped the tape.

The cardboard opened.

The woman closed her eyes briefly.

The younger officer stared.

The sergeant pulled apart the top flaps.

Inside was no jewelry.

No electronics.

No shoes.

No luxury goods.

There were two thick bound files.

A red evidence-preservation envelope.

Printed stills from body-camera recordings.

A sealed USB evidence container.

And on top, a dark blue municipal oversight folder.
