She turned it toward the deputy chief.
Her front-door camera had captured everything.
Wide angle.
High resolution.
Audio.
The deputy chief looked.
Then exhaled.
“Of course.”
The review counsel said:
“There are also driveway cameras.”
The sergeant closed his eyes briefly.
The house had six cameras.
Not because she expected police.
Because she had once represented a family after a burglary where investigators argued over timelines, and afterward she developed a mild obsession with redundant home security.
Her sister mocked her.
“You have more cameras than a casino.”
“Casinos know things.”
Now every angle existed.
The sergeant approaching.
Her pointing toward the house.
Phone screen visible.
His slap.
Grab.
Shove.
Package torn.
No ambiguity.
The Internal Affairs lieutenant asked:
“Who called?”
Dispatch identified the neighbor.
The deputy chief looked toward the review counsel.
“Do you know her?”
“No.”
“Any prior dispute?”
“No.”
“Do you know which house?”
Dispatch gave the number.
The counsel looked across the street.
Curtains moved.
She said nothing.
The deputy chief asked the sergeant:
“What exactly gave you suspicion after arriving?”
He answered too quickly.
“She matched the caller description and possessed the package.”
“Did you ask whether she lived here?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
“She said she did.”
“Did you verify?”
“I asked for identification.”
“Did you run the vehicle plate?”
“No.”
“Property record?”
“No.”
“Delivery label?”
The sergeant glanced toward the torn box.
“No.”
“Door access?”
“No.”
The counsel said:
“I offered to unlock the house.”
The deputy chief looked at the younger officer.
“Did you hear that?”
“Yes, sir.”
The sergeant turned.
“Be careful.”
The deputy chief’s voice changed.
“Sergeant.”
Silence.
“You will not speak to that officer again until directed.”
The younger officer stepped back.
The deputy chief looked toward him.
“You are not in trouble for answering questions.”
That sentence had to be spoken aloud.
The counsel noticed.
Cultures reveal themselves through the reassurance people need.
The younger officer looked relieved.
That mattered too.
The deputy chief ordered the sergeant relieved of field duty pending immediate review.
His service weapon remained secured according to policy.
