Then he answered.

β€œIt should be.”

Marcus noticed the wording.

Should be.

Not yes.

Not the indicator is active.

Just should be.

He didn't challenge the officer further.

Instead, he looked toward the street.

A woman stood beside her mailbox holding a phone.

Two other neighbors watched from their porches.

And Alan Pierce had begun moving away from the front walkway.

Marcus raised his voice.

β€œMr. Pierce.”

Alan stopped.

The young chief looked directly at him.

β€œPlease remain available to provide your account to the responding supervisor.”

Alan frowned.

β€œI'm not under arrest.”

β€œI didn't say you were.”

β€œThen I can leave.”

Marcus nodded.

β€œYou're free to leave unless an officer with lawful grounds tells you otherwise. But your report will be part of the review.”

Alan stared.

For the first time, his confidence appeared uncertain.

Then he looked toward Mallory.

The officer avoided his eyes.

Alan turned and walked toward his house.

Marcus watched him go.

Something about their exchange troubled him.

The familiarity.

The way Alan had stood beside the officer while he was being threatened.

And the way Mallory seemed to look toward him whenever asked why he'd initiated the encounter.

Marcus had spent years investigating difficult police contacts.

He knew what an ordinary mistaken complaint looked like.

This felt different.

But feelings weren't evidence.

He needed the original call.

The dispatch record.

The officer's footage.

And the accounts of everyone who saw what happened.

Marcus reached toward the phone in his pocket.

Then stopped.

Evelyn noticed.

β€œBaby?”

He looked at her.

His expression softened.

β€œMom, are you all right?”

She stared.

Then laughed bitterly.

β€œAre you all right?”

Marcus looked toward his shoulder.

The officer had gripped him hard enough to leave painful red marks beneath his shirt.

The shove against the porch railing had jarred his back.

But he could move.

He could breathe.

And he didn't believe he needed immediate emergency treatment.

Still, he knew injuries sometimes became clearer after the adrenaline faded.

β€œI'm shaken,” he admitted.

Evelyn's eyes filled.

Then she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him.

Marcus held her.
