“But I won't make it disappear because you're frightened of the consequences, either.”
The officer lowered his head.
And the first patrol supervisor arrived.
Captain Benjamin Reed had worked for the Redbrook Police Department for twenty-two years.
He was fifty-one, white, with short gray hair, a heavy build, and a reputation for handling complicated situations without unnecessary shouting.
He had served under three police chiefs.
Some he respected.
Others he tolerated.
He hadn't yet decided what to make of Marcus Price.
The new chief's résumé was impressive, but Benjamin had heard conflicting opinions about him.
Some officers believed Marcus would modernize the department.
Others complained that an outsider with experience in professional standards would treat the entire agency as a disciplinary problem.
Benjamin considered both views exaggerated.
He wanted to see how the young man actually led.
He hadn't expected their first meaningful conversation to occur in his mother's front yard after a patrol officer shoved him against a railing.
When Benjamin arrived, he saw the crowd.
Several neighbors stood near the sidewalk.
A woman held a phone.
A police SUV sat beside the curb.
And Derek Mallory stood near the driveway with an expression Benjamin had never seen on him before.
Fear.
The captain stepped out.
He looked toward Marcus.
“Chief.”
Marcus nodded.
“Captain.”
Benjamin glanced toward Evelyn.
Then toward the porch.
“Is anyone injured?”
Marcus explained the physical contact and offered to obtain a medical assessment.
Benjamin immediately arranged for the appropriate support.
Then he separated Mallory from the other witnesses and ensured the involved officer followed the established procedure for a use-of-force investigation.
He did not ask Marcus to tell him everything in front of the crowd.
Instead, he confirmed the immediate safety concerns, identified witnesses, and coordinated preservation of available evidence.
The independent agency would handle the detailed interviews.
Marcus appreciated that.
He watched Benjamin take control of the scene.
Then said quietly.
“Captain, I want this handled exactly as it would be if I were any other resident.”
Benjamin looked toward him.
For a moment, he seemed surprised.
Then nodded.
“Yes, Chief.”
Marcus continued.
“That means no special punishment because I'm the new chief. And no special protection for Mallory because he works here.”
