Benjamin studied him.

Then answered.

“Understood.”

For several seconds, they remained quiet.

Then Marcus added.

“There's one more concern.”

Benjamin looked up.

“The complainant, Alan Pierce, appeared to have a familiar relationship with the officer. I don't know whether that's relevant, but I want the original dispatch record preserved.”

The captain nodded.

“We'll make sure the investigators receive it.”

Marcus took a breath.

“Thank you.”

Benjamin looked toward the porch railing.

Then toward the tomato garden.

For a moment, he seemed troubled.

He had spent years training officers to respond carefully to uncertain property complaints.

The law didn't allow them to treat every caller's suspicions as established fact.

A report of possible trespassing could justify asking questions under appropriate circumstances.

But it didn't automatically authorize handcuffing someone who was peacefully repairing a family home.

Benjamin looked toward Marcus.

Then asked.

“Did Mallory identify any actual threat?”

The young chief shook his head.

“Not to me.”

The captain nodded slowly.

For several seconds, he studied the yard.

Then whispered.

“We need the footage.”

Marcus looked toward him.

“Yes.”

They both knew why.

Because the truth was no longer only about what had happened between one officer and one resident.

It was about whether the department Marcus had agreed to lead could confront misconduct even when the person responsible wore its uniform.

The footage became the center of the investigation.

A neighbor named Denise Walker had recorded the confrontation from the moment Mallory began shouting.

Her video showed Marcus standing with his hands open.

The officer pointing inches from his face.

Alan Pierce watching from behind.

Then the sudden shove that sent Marcus stumbling toward the tomato garden.

The recording also captured the officer grabbing his arm, pulling him toward the porch railing, and reaching for his handcuffs.

The angle wasn't perfect.

But it clearly showed Marcus wasn't advancing aggressively toward Mallory.

He was trying to maintain distance.

Another recording came from Evelyn's doorbell camera.

It captured the officer arriving, approaching Marcus, and beginning the confrontation.

The camera was positioned above the front door, so the officer's face wasn't visible during every second.
