βThat's a serious allegation.β
βI know.β
She sighed.
βThen we'll refer the records through the proper channels and ask legal counsel to review whether any city processes were misrepresented.β
Marcus looked toward the letters.
For a moment, he remembered the way Alan smiled during the confrontation.
Then he said.
βThere's one thing I don't want.β
Helen waited.
βI don't want the city treating my mother's property differently because I'm chief.β
The older woman nodded.
βThat's fair.β
Marcus continued.
βIf the development company has a lawful application, it deserves ordinary review. If it doesn't, it shouldn't be allowed to threaten residents with government authority it doesn't possess.β
Helen took a breath.
βI'll arrange for planning and legal staff to examine the documents independently.β
Marcus thanked her.
Then they ended the call.
For several minutes, he sat quietly.
He had been police chief for less than forty-eight hours.
Already, his first challenge involved the temptation to use his authority for a deeply personal purpose.
He understood why that temptation was dangerous.
The officer had assaulted him.
The neighbor had helped create the confrontation.
And his mother was frightened of losing the home she'd shared with his father.
Every part of him wanted to take control.
But a police chief's authority came with limits.
He couldn't become the investigator, prosecutor, witness, and judge in his own case.
If he did, the outcome would always be vulnerable to the argument that it was personal revenge.
Marcus closed the folder.
Then looked toward the framed family photograph above the fireplace.
He could almost hear his father's voice.
If you want people to trust your judgment, learn to accept limits even when those limits make your life harder.
Marcus took a breath.
The difficult part wasn't knowing what the right process looked like.
It was choosing that process when the injustice involved someone he loved.
Derek Mallory went home that night without his normal confidence.
His wife, Caroline, was sitting at the kitchen table when he arrived.
She was thirty-six, a dental hygienist with shoulder-length brown hair and a tired expression.
Their two children were upstairs getting ready for bed.
