Malcolm to the head of customer experience:

The board is overly focused on identity-related complaints. Move anything without explicit slurs or documented disparate policy into service recovery. We need the trend line normalized before Q3.

Nobody spoke.

Maya read it twice.

Then asked:

“What does normalized mean?”

Malcolm’s expression hardened.

“You know exactly what it means.”

“I want you to say it.”

“It means remove noise.”

Maya stared.

“Customers reporting biased treatment were noise?”

“That is not what I said.”

“It is what you wrote.”

Malcolm looked toward Anderson.

“This is becoming adversarial.”

Anderson replied:

“It is an emergency board meeting concerning your continued employment.”

“It is supposed to be adversarial.”

Maya almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Anderson said:

“Maya, there is another issue.”

She waited.

The board chair shared a second document.

Employee training slides.

A program called PREMIUM CABIN INTEGRITY INITIATIVE.

Maya had never seen it.

Slides instructed cabin staff to watch for:

  • mismatch between passenger presentation and booked cabin,

  • unusual ticketing patterns,

  • travelers who appeared unfamiliar with premium service,

  • possible unauthorized seat changes,

  • companions unable to explain purchase source.

Maya’s stomach tightened.

She looked at the wording.

“Passenger presentation?”

Malcolm said quickly:

“That is not racial.”

“I did not ask whether it was racial.”

Maya’s voice sharpened.

“I asked what ‘passenger presentation’ means.”

Nobody answered.

The general counsel said:

“We have interview notes suggesting some cabin crews interpreted it as clothing, age, demeanor, perceived socioeconomic status, and race.”

Maya closed her eyes.

The cabin around her suddenly felt very quiet.

She looked at the cream sweater she had changed into.

Then toward the stain-covered brown gown sealed inside a garment bag near her feet.

Anderson saw her expression.
