Yet something about Maya’s composure changed the atmosphere.
Passengers were no longer watching a messy accident.
They were watching two women decide what the accident meant.
Jessica straightened.
Her gaze moved over Maya from head to toe.
The expensive gown.
Gold bracelet.
Small diamond earrings.
The infant.
The first-class seat.
The structured handbag near Maya’s feet.
Then Jessica’s eyes stopped on the boarding pass tucked into the seat pocket.
“Actually,” she said, “I need to see your boarding pass again.”
Maya stared.
“Excuse me?”
“Your boarding pass.”
“You checked it when I boarded.”
“I need to verify something.”
Maya looked toward the front of the aircraft.
They had not pushed back from the gate.
Passengers were still boarding farther behind.
A ground worker moved past the open cabin door.
“Verify what?”
Jessica extended her hand.
“Your seat assignment.”
Maya looked around.
Seat 12A was a first-class window seat.
Her name was displayed discreetly on the digital passenger manifest the crew carried.
Her boarding pass had been scanned twice already.
Maya reached into the seat pocket.
She removed the paper pass and gave it to Jessica.
Jessica studied it.
Then looked at the seat number above Maya.

She looked at the boarding pass again.
“Hmm.”
Maya waited.
Jessica said, “These premium seats cost considerably more.”
Across the aisle, the passenger recording lowered her phone by half an inch as though unsure she had heard correctly.
Maya asked, “What does that have to do with my boarding pass?”
“I need to make sure there hasn’t been an error.”
“There hasn’t.”
Jessica turned the boarding pass over.
“This happens occasionally.”
