The food restrictions began in December.

At first, Vanessa told Jordan he was eating too many snacks.

She claimed he needed to learn self-control.

Then she began treating food as something he could earn or lose through obedience.

If Jordan forgot to finish a chore, she delayed his dinner.

If he argued with Caleb, she reduced what she put on his plate.

If he asked for seconds, she accused him of being greedy.

Jordan didn't understand.

His father had always taught him that food wasn't a reward for being good.

At school, teachers encouraged children to eat balanced meals.

But Vanessa spoke with such certainty that he began wondering whether he was wrong.

One evening, he asked for another helping of chicken.

Vanessa looked toward him.

"Didn't you already eat?"

Jordan nodded.

"But I'm still hungry."

She folded her arms.

"Then perhaps you should have appreciated the first serving."

He lowered his eyes.

Caleb looked down at his own plate.

Mia pushed a piece of chicken around with her fork.

Jordan went to bed hungry.

The next morning, Vanessa gave Caleb and Mia generous breakfasts.

Jordan received a small piece of toast.

When he asked for eggs, she looked toward the photograph of Grace on the refrigerator.

"Your father has spoiled you because he feels guilty about your mother."

Jordan froze.

She continued.

"Well, I'm not going to do that."

The boy stared at his plate.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then whispered.

"My mom didn't spoil me."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Don't talk back."

Jordan lowered his head.

That morning, he went to school with an empty stomach.

It wasn't the last time.

By Christmas, the pattern was firmly established.

When Marcus was home, Vanessa prepared full family meals.

Jordan received the same portions as the other children.

She sometimes encouraged him to take seconds, smiling warmly at her husband.

"He's a growing boy."

Marcus laughed.

"Tell me about it. I'm going to need a second job when he's a teenager."

But when Marcus worked late, Jordan often received much less.

Sometimes Vanessa claimed he'd misbehaved.

Other times, she said he needed to learn gratitude.
