When Mia spilled juice, Vanessa helped her wipe it up.
When Jordan spilled juice, she accused him of being careless and disrespectful.
The boy tried harder.
He cleaned his room.
Finished homework early.
And learned to speak quietly around his stepmother.
But the rules kept changing.
One evening, Vanessa told him he couldn't leave the dinner table until he'd finished his vegetables.
The next evening, she became angry because he took too long eating.
Jordan began asking permission for ordinary things.
Could he have water?
Could he use the bathroom?
Could he take another piece of bread?
Marcus occasionally noticed.
"Buddy, you don't have to ask me every time you want water."
Jordan would smile weakly.
"Okay, Dad."
But the behavior continued.
Vanessa always had an explanation.
"He's adjusting to structure."
Marcus nodded.
He wanted the blended family to work.
And because Vanessa appeared patient whenever he was present, he interpreted the boy's nervousness as part of the adjustment.
He would later hate himself for that assumption.
The first major change came after Marcus received a promotion.
His employer expanded its transportation operations, and Marcus was offered a regional supervisory position.
The salary was substantially better.
It also required him to leave before sunrise several mornings a week.
Some evenings, he returned after seven.
During peak shipping periods, he might not arrive home until the children were already getting ready for bed.
Marcus hesitated before accepting.
He worried about missing school activities and spending less time with Jordan.
Vanessa encouraged him.
"Baby, this is what you've been working toward."
He looked uncertain.
"I just don't want the kids feeling like I'm never here."
She touched his arm.
"They have me."
Those three words reassured him.
He accepted the promotion.
For the first few weeks, everything seemed fine.
Vanessa sent him photographs of the children's lunches.
She texted pictures of completed homework.
And sometimes sent cheerful messages describing family dinners.
Everybody ate well tonight.
Jordan finished his math worksheet.
The kids are getting ready for bed. Don't work too late.
Marcus kept those messages.
They made him feel like a responsible father even when he couldn't physically be home.
He never thought to question why Vanessa always seemed so eager to photograph the meals.
