Her children had schedules.

Their school supplies were carefully organized.

And she seemed able to manage several responsibilities without becoming overwhelmed.

When Marcus brought Jordan over for dinner, Vanessa prepared the boy's favorite meal.

Macaroni and cheese.

Baked chicken.

And corn.

She placed an extra helping on his plate.

"Growing boys need to eat."

Jordan smiled.

"Thank you."

Marcus watched the exchange with relief.

For months, he had worried that introducing another woman into his son's life might feel like replacing Grace.

But Vanessa seemed to understand.

She never asked Jordan to call her Mom.

She said he could call her Vanessa for as long as he wanted.

And during their early months together, she listened whenever he spoke about his mother.

Once, Jordan showed her a photograph of Grace holding him as a baby.

Vanessa smiled.

"She was beautiful."

Jordan nodded.

"She smelled like vanilla."

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

His eyes filled.

Then she told Jordan that remembering his mother was a good thing.

Marcus fell in love with her a little more that day.

Or perhaps he fell in love with the possibility that his son might finally have another adult who cared for him.

He would spend the next several years struggling to understand the difference.

Marcus married Vanessa eighteen months later.

The wedding was small and cheerful. All three children participated, wearing coordinated blue outfits and carrying flowers down the aisle of a neighborhood church.

Jordan stood beside his father during the ceremony.

Caleb helped carry the rings.

Mia scattered flower petals so enthusiastically that several landed in the minister's shoes.

Everyone laughed.

Marcus remembered looking toward Vanessa and feeling something he'd almost forgotten was possible.

Hope.

After Grace died, he believed that part of his life had closed forever. Now he was standing beside a beautiful woman who appeared to love his son and welcomed the idea of building a family together.

When they exchanged vows, Vanessa promised to treat Jordan with patience and kindness.

Marcus believed her.

Why wouldn't he?

For nearly eighteen months, she had shown him every reason to think she meant it.

After the wedding, Vanessa and her children moved into Marcus's suburban house.
