The president replied that she was handling the situation.

The contractor warned that the treasurer had requested additional documentation.

The president became angrier.

She believed the treasurer had betrayed her.

She believed the vice president was weak.

And she believed the father was using technical arguments to embarrass her.

Then she thought about the insect nest reported near an unused common-area maintenance strip.

A worker had identified it earlier in the week and recommended that a qualified pest-control professional assess it.

The report had not yet been resolved.

The president saw an opportunity.

She could create an incident that would make the father's backyard appear dangerous and out of control.

She imagined documenting the children screaming, claiming the property attracted pests, and using the chaos to justify more restrictions.

She did not stop to consider how reckless her plan was.

By Saturday morning, her resentment had overwhelmed her judgment.

And while five children played behind a wooden fence, she approached carrying a long branch with a large hornets' nest attached.

She believed she was about to teach their father a lesson.

She had no idea that the board meeting she intended to sabotage was already underway.

Now, standing beside the fence with the nest suspended above the yard, the HOA president was discovering that her plan had failed before she could complete it.

The father's phone remained in his hand.

On the screen, the vice president was speaking to another director.

The treasurer had covered her mouth.

The secretary appeared stunned.

The property-management representative was already contacting emergency services from a separate phone.

The HOA president looked at the faces on the screen.

Then she forced a laugh.

“This is ridiculous.”

Nobody answered.

She looked toward the father.

“You're manipulating them.”

He remained several feet from the fence.

“Put the branch away from my yard.”

“I found a dangerous insect nest near the neighborhood walking trail.”

“Then you should have reported it to someone qualified to handle it.”

“I was removing a hazard!”

“By holding it over five children?”

Her face reddened.

“Don't twist my words.”

The father looked at the phone.

“Did everyone hear that?”

The vice president answered.

“Yes.”

The HOA president leaned toward the fence.

“You people don't understand what it's like to maintain a neighborhood.”

The treasurer spoke sharply from the phone.

“We understand perfectly well that this is not an acceptable safety procedure.”

The woman looked shocked.

“You're taking his side?”

“We're asking you to stop endangering people.”

The HOA president shook her head.
