When an officer approached him, he agreed to provide a statement.
He explained that the HOA president had arrived carrying the branch before the father came outside.
He had heard her shouting toward the children.
He had seen the father bring them indoors.
The neighbor's account provided an additional independent perspective.
Soon, other residents began emerging from their houses.
Some stood at a distance.
Others asked what had happened.
The father did not encourage a crowd.
He wanted the situation contained.
The last thing the family needed was more chaos.
A qualified insect-control specialist arrived and assessed the nest.
The responders established a safe area while the specialist handled the situation.
The father remained indoors with his children during that process.
He did not allow them to return outside until the relevant responders confirmed that the immediate hazard had been addressed.
The youngest daughter sat beside him on the sofa.
Her feet did not reach the floor.
She held a stuffed rabbit against her chest.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, baby?”
“Were those bugs going to get me?”
He looked into her eyes.
“I don't know what would have happened if that nest had fallen.”
She swallowed.
“Would I have needed my medicine?”
“Maybe. That's why we have your emergency plan, and that's why I got everybody inside.”
The girl looked toward the window.
“Did the pink lady know?”
The father hesitated.
He did not want to lie.
“Yes. She knew you had an allergy.”
The girl's eyes filled.
“Then why did she bring it?”
He felt his throat tighten.
“I wish I had a good answer.”
She lowered her head.
He gently pulled her onto his lap.
“But listen to me. You didn't do anything wrong. Not one thing.”
The child pressed her face against his chest.
He held her for a long time.
His other children gathered around them.
The boy sat on the carpet.
The oldest daughter leaned against the sofa.
The two middle girls curled up beside each other.
The father looked at all five.
He remembered the first night after their mother's funeral, when they had slept together in the living room because nobody wanted to be alone.
Now they were huddled together again.
Only this time, their fear had been caused by someone who should have been helping keep their neighborhood safe.
He wrapped his arms around as many of them as he could reach.
“I'm here,” he whispered. “You're safe with me.”
He wished those words could erase what they had seen.
But he knew fear did not disappear simply because an adult promised everything would be fine.
