The boy's next basketball game.
Then the youngest daughter pointed toward the fence.
“Is that where she stood?”
The father nodded.
“Yes.”
The little girl looked at the wooden boards.
“Can we make it taller?”
The father felt his heart ache.
“The fence is already tall enough to give us privacy. What happened wasn't because the fence was too short.”
She thought about that.
“Then how do we stop her?”
He looked at all five children.
“We make sure adults do their jobs. We tell the truth. We ask for help when we need it. And we don't let someone convince us that being frightened means we did something wrong.”
The oldest daughter listened carefully.
Then she asked whether the camera had really shown the board what happened.
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
“Yes.”
The girl looked up at the small camera beneath the roof.
“Then I'm glad you put it there.”
The father smiled.
“Me too.”
The boy stood.
He walked toward the basketball.
He picked it up.
Then he looked at his father.
“Can I shoot a few?”
The father felt emotion rise unexpectedly.
He stood.
“Absolutely.”
The boy bounced the ball once.
The sound echoed across the yard.
He froze.
His eyes moved toward the fence.
The father noticed.
He walked beside him.
“Go ahead.”
The boy bounced it again.
Then a third time.
Slowly, his shoulders relaxed.
He dribbled toward the portable hoop.
He missed his first shot.
The ball hit the rim and rolled across the concrete.
His father retrieved it.
“Try again.”
The boy grinned faintly.
He shot.
This time, the ball dropped through the hoop.
The father raised both arms.
“There it is!”
The middle daughters laughed.
The oldest daughter began cheering.
And the youngest ran toward her chalk drawing.
For the first time since Saturday, the backyard sounded like a home again.
But the father's relief was incomplete.
The former president had lost her position.
The immediate threat had been addressed.
Yet the financial investigation was only beginning.
And the evidence uncovered during the next two weeks would reveal that the hornets' nest incident was connected to the very contractor whose invoices had raised the father's suspicions.
The independent financial reviewer began by examining the association's vendor records from the previous eighteen months.
The contractor had received payments for landscaping-related inspections, compliance assessments, and emergency hazard responses.
Some invoices were supported by photographs, work orders, and ordinary maintenance records.
Others were not.
Several lacked identifying information about the worker who supposedly performed the inspection.
