The blonde woman in the hot-pink suit thought nobody could see her crouching behind the yellow Mustang.

She was wrong.

At 10:17 on a Saturday morning, forty-nine-year-old Pamela Whitcomb slipped beneath the raised garage door of a beautiful suburban house in Hawthorne Estates, a private residential community outside Charlotte, North Carolina. She wore an expensive fitted hot-pink blazer, a matching pencil skirt, white high heels, pearl earrings, and oversized designer sunglasses. An official-looking HOA clipboard was tucked beneath her left arm, while her right hand held a laminated violation notice.

The garage belonged to Isaiah Reed, a thirty-five-year-old Black homeowner who stood nearly six feet three inches tall, with broad muscular shoulders, deep-brown skin, closely faded black hair, and a carefully trimmed beard. He was wearing a charcoal-gray T-shirt, black slide sandals, and navy-blue shorts covered with enormous yellow Minions cartoon characters.

Isaiah had been polishing the chrome around the driver's window of his prized bright-yellow 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback. Two glossy black racing stripes stretched across the hood and roof, while polished chrome wheels reflected the morning sunlight. The car had taken almost eleven years of work to restore, and nearly every piece of its history mattered to him.

Pamela didn't know he was watching her reflection in the Mustang's side window.

She lowered herself beside the rear wheel, glanced toward the driveway, and reached toward the car with the violation notice. Behind her, a twenty-one-year-old white man in a black polo shirt, beige shorts, and spotless white sneakers waited near the mailbox, repeatedly checking his phone.

He was Pamela's son, Dylan.

And he wanted that Mustang.

Not one like it.

Not a restored reproduction.

That exact car.

Pamela pressed the notice against the lower rear quarter panel. She was preparing to take a photograph when Isaiah's voice came from behind her.

"Can I help you with something?"

Pamela jerked upright so quickly that her sunglasses slipped down her nose.

For one second, she looked frightened.

Then she recognized the homeowner and straightened her blazer.

"Mr. Reed. You startled me."

Isaiah glanced toward the notice.

"You walked into my garage."

Pamela brushed imaginary dust from her skirt.

"I'm conducting an official community inspection."

He looked toward the open driveway.

"Inside my garage?"

"Your vehicle has been the subject of several complaints."

Isaiah slowly placed his polishing cloth on the workbench.

"What complaints?"

Pamela lifted the clipboard.

"Unapproved vehicle storage, excessive visibility from the roadway, and possible violations of community appearance standards."
