“Well.”

One word.

Enough.

Brenda recovered first.

“You have no context.”

Frank raised an eyebrow.

“I have eleven minutes of context.”

“That was neighborhood cleanup.”

Carlos laughed.

“You cleaned the neighborhood by putting garbage in our yards?”

Brenda pointed at him.

“You have had unresolved violations for months.”

Carlos’s expression hardened.

“No.”

“I have photographs.”

Marcus looked at him.

Carlos smiled without humor.

“Funny thing.”

He looked at Brenda.

“So do I.”

Brenda turned toward Tyler.

“We’re leaving.”

Marcus said:

“Leave the bin.”

“It’s mine.”

“Then police can return it.”

Her head snapped toward him.

“You called police?”

“No.”

Danielle held up her phone.

“I did.”

Brenda stared at her.

Danielle’s voice was calm.

“My mother-in-law got hit with garbage at her own birthday cookout.”

Sirens sounded faintly beyond the subdivision entrance.

Brenda grabbed Tyler’s wrist.

“Come on.”

Tyler pulled away.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“I’m not running.”

“We are not running.”

“It feels like running.”

Brenda stared at him.

Tyler looked toward Marcus’s family.

Then toward four neighbors holding phones.

“I told you this was stupid.”

The sentence landed harder than everything else.

Brenda’s face went rigid.

“Get in the house.”

“No.”

“Tyler.”

“No.”

She stepped toward him.

Marcus raised his free hand.

“Don’t.”

Brenda turned.

“Stay out of my family.”

“I am standing in mine.”

That stopped her.

Police arrived three minutes later.

Officer Lena Watkins entered through Marcus’s gate with Officer Paul Greene behind her.

They stopped when they saw the patio.

Food.

Trash.

Broken garbage bags.

Phones.

Family members standing away from the mess.

Brenda and Tyler visible beyond the fence.

Watkins looked at Marcus.

“You the homeowner?”

“Yes.”

“Anybody injured?”

“No.”

Gloria raised one hand.

“Only emotionally.”

Samuel whispered:

“Gloria.”

“What? My potato salad is dead.”

Despite everything, Officer Greene almost smiled.

Watkins maintained composure.

“Okay.”

She looked toward Brenda.

“Who dumped this?”

Marcus pointed upward.

“He did.”

Tyler immediately said:

“Yes.”

Brenda turned.

“Tyler.”

He ignored her.

Watkins looked at him.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Tyler swallowed.

Brenda spoke.

“Officer, he doesn’t need to answer without understanding—”

Watkins raised a hand.

“Ma’am, I’m speaking to him.”
