"You two are impossible."

But she was smiling.

And Daniel noticed something that made his chest tighten.

His daughter hadn't looked toward the backyard window once all afternoon.

She was completely absorbed in building something.

For several hours, fear had been replaced by curiosity.

It wasn't a magical cure.

But it was progress.

And Daniel was grateful.

The following week, Emily presented her project at the school science exhibition.

Her rotating solar-system display attracted a small crowd.

She explained how different planetary positions affected visibility, how astronomers studied the night sky, and why patient observation mattered when examining distant objects.

Marcus attended with Daniel.

They stood near the back of the school gymnasium watching her speak.

She seemed nervous at first.

Then one of the judges asked about the construction.

Emily brightened.

She explained that she'd designed the layout and worked with her father and neighbor to make the platform stable.

The judge smiled.

"Did you learn anything unexpected?"

Emily considered the question.

Then answered.

"That sometimes a model can look perfect, but if the support underneath is wrong, the whole thing falls apart."

Marcus glanced at Daniel.

The two men exchanged a small smile.

Emily continued explaining the importance of checking the structure instead of simply decorating the surface.

For a moment, Marcus heard his father in her words.

Samuel Bennett had spent his life teaching the same principle through broken floors, crooked walls, and carefully repaired houses.

Now a thirteen-year-old girl was using that idea to explain a model of the solar system.

Marcus felt unexpectedly proud.

He hadn't taught her everything.

He'd simply helped her discover that a good idea deserved a strong foundation.

At the end of the exhibition, Emily received a special recognition award for creativity and presentation.

She ran toward Daniel with the certificate held high.

"Dad!"

He hugged her.

"I'm proud of you."

Then she turned toward Marcus.

"Mr. Fix-It! We did it!"

He laughed.

"You did it. I just helped keep Jupiter from falling off the table."

Emily burst out laughing.

For a moment, Daniel watched them, thinking about the afternoon when glass covered his daughter's bedroom floor.

The contrast was almost overwhelming.

The same child who had once been frightened to sit near her window was now standing in a crowded gymnasium, excitedly explaining the universe to strangers.

Daniel understood that the fear hadn't vanished completely.

But it no longer defined every part of her life.

By early summer, Daniel made another decision.

He asked Emily whether she wanted to move.

The question surprised her.

They were sitting at the kitchen table after dinner.

Outside, the backyard trees moved gently in the warm evening breeze.

Emily looked toward him.
