"We don't always know what somebody has been through. So we should try to treat people carefully, even when we don't understand everything about them."

For a moment, her voice wavered.

Then she smiled.

"Anyway, tonight we're going to look at some planets."

The audience laughed warmly.

Emily stepped away from the microphone to applause.

Daniel wiped one eye.

Marcus pretended not to notice.

For the next two hours, the clubhouse lawn filled with conversation.

Children gathered around the telescopes.

Parents asked questions.

Students explained their projects.

And several residents who had barely spoken during the months of conflict found themselves discussing something far removed from HOA politics.

Marcus helped a little boy adjust a display stand.

Daniel assisted with the astronomy equipment.

Helen carried bottled water to the volunteers.

Nothing was particularly glamorous.

But the event worked.

Near nine o'clock, Emily approached Marcus.

"Come here."

He looked surprised.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing. I want to show you something."

She led him toward one of the telescopes.

The instrument was pointed toward the night sky.

Emily adjusted the viewing position under the instructor's guidance.

Then stepped aside.

"Look."

Marcus leaned toward the eyepiece.

For a moment, he saw darkness.

Then a bright object came into focus.

Jupiter.

He could make out the planet's small disk and several tiny points of light nearby.

He stepped backward in surprise.

"Wow."

Emily grinned.

"Those are some of its moons."

Marcus leaned forward again.

For several seconds, he remained completely still.

Then he stepped away and looked toward the girl.

"That's incredible."

She smiled proudly.

"I know."

Daniel joined them.

"What are we looking at?"

Emily pointed toward the telescope.

"Jupiter."

Her father took a turn.

When he looked up again, his expression was almost childlike.

Marcus laughed.

"Pretty amazing, isn't it?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yeah."

For a moment, the three stood together beneath the stars.

And Marcus thought about the shattered window.

The little girl who once feared sitting in her room.

The father who had worried he couldn't protect her.

And the way both of them were now smiling at something beautiful in the night sky.

The past hadn't disappeared.

But it no longer controlled the entire future.

Later, as the event was ending, Daniel received a message from his attorney concerning the final documentation of the property-damage matter.

The remaining restitution arrangements had been completed, and the relevant records were ready to be closed or retained according to the applicable requirements.

He read the message carefully.

Then placed his phone back in his pocket.

Marcus noticed his expression.

"Everything all right?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

He paused.

"Just some paperwork finally coming to an end."

Marcus understood.
