Marina has found one place at the harbor where the rain cannot fall directly on her.
It is not a kennel.
It is not a bed.
It is the narrow space beneath an old fishing boat pulled up beside a working marina.
The large white dog lies partly underneath the hull, her dirty coat pressed against the damp concrete. Bits of leaves and debris cling to her fur.
Behind her, ropes and fishing equipment sit in tangled piles.
Beyond the boat, vessels disappear into the gray morning mist.
Marina barely seems interested in any of it.
Her abdomen is noticeably enlarged.
Her coat is wet and filthy.
Her eyes look exhausted.
And when someone finally sits close enough to see her clearly, Marina does not run.
She simply lowers her head again.
Whatever brought her beneath this boat, she appears to have reached a point where getting back up is becoming harder than staying hidden.
At First, Workers Only Saw a White Dog Near the Boats
A marina is full of places for an animal to disappear.
Trailers.
Storage areas.
Equipment.
Stacks of rope.
Boats sitting above the ground.
Someone might catch a glimpse of a dog and then lose sight of her seconds later.
That seemed to be what was happening with Marina.
A large pale dog had been appearing around the harbor.
Then she vanished.
Later, she appeared again.
Eventually, one location became consistent.
The old fishing boat.
Marina kept returning underneath it.
The Boat Offered Almost Nothing—Except Cover
There was no soft bedding waiting for her.
The ground remained hard.
Wind could still reach her.
Water collected across parts of the marina when the weather turned wet.
But the hull created a roof.
For a stray dog searching for somewhere to rest, even that could matter.
Marina could press herself close to the boat and remain partly hidden from activity around the docks.
It was not comfortable shelter.
It was simply more shelter than the open pavement offered.
Then Someone Got Close Enough to See Her Body
From a distance, Marina's long dirty coat disguised some of her condition.
