That hesitation said more about her condition than any dramatic reaction could have.

An adult dog should not need that much effort simply to rise from the ground.

She Took Only a Few Steps

Once upright, Marina did not suddenly walk away.

She moved slowly.

One step.

Then another.

Her head remained low.

Her body looked heavy.

After only a short distance, she stopped.

The boat was still beside her.

The hiding place remained available.

Marina looked toward it.

For a moment, it seemed she might crawl directly back underneath.

That Was When Her Routine Began to Make Sense

The boat was not necessarily special.

It may simply have been close.

For a dog whose movement had become difficult, distance mattered.

Marina did not need the best hiding place in the marina.

She needed one she could reach.

Once she found it, returning there required less energy than searching for somewhere new.

Illness can make an animal's world progressively smaller.

Eventually, a single boat can become the center of it.

Every Necessary Trip Could Be Draining Her Further

A stray dog still needs water.

Food.

A place to relieve herself.

Some degree of protection from weather and human activity.

Marina could not remain under the boat forever.

Each time she left, however, she had to spend energy she appeared to have very little of.

Then she had to make it back.

That creates a dangerous cycle for a sick animal.

The weaker the dog becomes, the smaller the safe radius becomes.

The Wet Marina Was No Place for Recovery

The pavement was damp.

Wind moved across the open harbor.

Working areas contain equipment, ropes, hooks, machinery, vehicles, and other hazards.

Even a healthy stray dog would be vulnerable there.

Marina was not healthy enough to navigate those risks normally.

If something frightened her, she might not be able to move quickly.

If her condition deteriorated suddenly, she could disappear beneath equipment where no one noticed.

The boat had helped conceal her.
