It could also make a medical emergency harder to see.
Once Marina Was Safely Contained, Everything Would Change
She would no longer need to crawl under a hull for protection.
She could lie on clean, dry bedding.
Water could remain within easy reach.
Her temperature could be monitored.
Her breathing could be observed.
Her abdomen could finally be examined properly.
And for perhaps the first time in days—or longer—Marina could stop spending energy simply maintaining a place to exist.
Her Veterinary Examination Would Need to Be Thorough
The abdominal enlargement would naturally receive attention.
But Marina was more than her belly.
Her body condition mattered.
Her skin and coat needed evaluation.
Her heart and lungs needed to be checked.
Her hydration status mattered.
So did her gums, temperature, lymph nodes, mobility, appetite, and signs of pain.
If she was an intact female, reproductive conditions would be considered.
If fluid was suspected, the underlying reason would need investigation.
If a mass or organ problem was present, imaging could help clarify it.
There was no responsible shortcut.
One Diagnosis Could Completely Change the Urgency
Some abdominal conditions progress slowly.
Others can become emergencies.
That is why waiting to see whether the swelling simply disappears would be unsafe.
A distended abdomen accompanied by weakness, collapse, difficulty breathing, pale gums, repeated unproductive retching, significant pain, or rapidly worsening condition can require urgent veterinary attention.
Marina's exhaustion alone was enough reason to take her condition seriously.
The Dirt Could Wait
People often want to clean a rescued dog immediately.
Marina certainly looked as though she needed it.
Her white coat was stained.
Debris clung to her.
But grooming was not the priority.
A sick, exhausted dog may become stressed by bathing and prolonged handling.
First determine whether Marina is medically stable.
Then address the coat in a way her condition can tolerate.
She did not need to look rescued.
She needed to become safe.
Her First Real Rest Might Look Almost Identical to What She Was Already Doing
Marina might still lie on her side.
Still keep her head low.
Still sleep for hours.
