Up close, one feature was impossible to miss.
Her abdomen was significantly distended.
It looked disproportionately large compared with the rest of her body.
That immediately changed the situation.
A swollen or enlarged abdomen in a dog can have many possible explanations, and appearance alone cannot determine which one is responsible.
Pregnancy can enlarge the abdomen.
Fluid accumulation can do it.
Organ enlargement, masses, gastrointestinal problems, hormonal disorders, and other medical conditions may also change abdominal size.
Some causes are relatively manageable.
Others can be urgent.
Marina needed a veterinarian, not a guess.
Her Exhaustion Made the Swelling More Concerning
Marina did not behave like an energetic dog who simply happened to have a large belly.
She looked depleted.
Much of the time, she remained lying down.
Her head rested low.
When she shifted positions, she moved slowly.
Standing required effort.
That combination—abdominal enlargement plus marked lethargy—made careful medical assessment especially important.
No one at the marina could know what was happening inside her just by looking.
She Was Dirty Enough to Suggest This Wasn't Her First Night Outside
Marina's coat carried the environment with it.
Mud and grime darkened sections of the white fur.
Small pieces of debris had become caught along her back and sides.
The fur around her legs was dirty from repeated contact with wet ground.
None of that could establish exactly how long she had been outside.
A long-coated dog can become dirty surprisingly quickly in bad weather.
But Marina certainly did not look like a dog who had simply stepped away from a clean living room moments earlier.
Her Face Was Strikingly Quiet
There was no dramatic barking when someone approached.
No lunging.
No frantic attempt to escape.
Marina watched.
Her eyes followed movement.
But her body stayed low.
That could reflect temperament.
It could reflect exhaustion.
Pain or illness might also reduce a dog's willingness to move.
Quietness should never automatically be interpreted as trust.
Sometimes a dog remains still because movement has become too difficult.
A Person Sat Near Her Instead of Pulling Her Out
Marina was already in a vulnerable position.
