He didn't ask what I'd done to make her angry.

And he didn't say we needed to hear her side before he could comfort me.

He simply held me.

For the first time in months, I felt that I was allowed to be frightened without being punished for it.

Our stepmother entered the living room several minutes later.

She had repaired her makeup.

Her hair was smooth.

And she was carrying the same leather handbag she'd taken into the business center.

She stopped when she saw Dad sitting between us.

Then she sighed.

"This is getting ridiculous."

My father looked up.

"Stay where you are."

She froze.

He spoke calmly.

"I heard what you said in the driveway."

She laughed nervously.

"You heard a conversation taken out of context."

Dad shook his head.

"I heard you say you forged my signature."

Her smile faded.

She glanced toward my brother.

Then she looked back at Dad.

"You know how teenagers are. He's been trying to turn you against me."

My brother moved closer to me.

Dad noticed.

He took a breath.

"Don't blame him."

She folded her arms.

"He's been disrespectful for months."

Dad looked toward the phone on the coffee table.

Then he asked one question.

"Did you submit paperwork to send my daughter to a residential program?"

Our stepmother hesitated.

"I researched options."

"Did you submit paperwork?"

She looked irritated.

"You've been too busy to handle what she needs."

My father remained still.

"Did you sign my name?"

For several seconds, she didn't answer.

Then she said quietly, "I took care of the administrative details."

Dad's expression changed.

"That's not what I asked."

She looked away.

Finally, she whispered, "Yes."

I remember my father closing his eyes.

For a moment, his face seemed older.

Then he asked, "What else did you sign?"

My stepmother looked toward the hallway.

And for the first time, I realized she was afraid of more than the recording.

There were other papers.

Other secrets.

Things my brother and I hadn't seen.

My father stood.

He told us to remain together in the living room while he contacted the family attorney and arranged for my grandmother to come.

Then he looked at his wife.

"You're not taking either child anywhere."

She opened her mouth.

He continued.

"And I want every document you submitted, every email you sent, and every appointment you arranged in my children's names."

She stared.

Then she said something I wouldn't fully understand until years later.

"You don't know what this is going to cost us."
