But those facts became convenient excuses for ignoring our actual experiences.

I remember the first time she told me my father was disappointed in me.

I had forgotten to put a school worksheet inside my backpack.

She found it on the kitchen counter.

"How many times do I have to remind you?"

I apologized.

She folded the paper.

"Your father works all day to give you everything, and you can't even follow one simple instruction."

I started crying.

She looked irritated.

"Don't start that."

I tried to stop.

Then she leaned closer.

"If your father knew how much trouble you were, he wouldn't want to come home."

I stared.

I was seven years old.

And I believed her.

That night, when Dad arrived, I ran to him and asked whether he'd had a good day.

He smiled.

"Better now."

I hugged him tightly.

He laughed.

"What's all this for?"

I wanted to tell him what she'd said.

But she was standing behind him.

Watching.

So I whispered, "Nothing."

Then I held him tighter.

My brother noticed more than I did.

He saw the way our stepmother checked our phones.

He heard her making comments about our mother's family.

And he began questioning why important messages from our grandmother never seemed to reach Dad.

Our mother's mother lived about an hour away.

She was a retired nurse who visited whenever she could, brought homemade meals, and never forgot birthdays. She was one of the few people who could speak about our mother without making the house feel tense.

My stepmother disliked those visits.

She said Grandma was interfering.

She claimed Grandma encouraged us to cling to the past.

And she began insisting that every visit be scheduled through her.

One Saturday, Grandma called to ask whether she could take us to the park.

My stepmother said we had already made plans.

We hadn't.

I knew because my brother and I had spent most of the morning doing nothing.

When Grandma asked to speak with me, my stepmother said I was taking a nap.

I was sitting at the kitchen table coloring.

My brother heard the entire conversation.

After she hung up, he looked toward her.

"Why did you lie?"

She turned sharply.

"Excuse me?"

He pointed toward me.

"She's not asleep."

Our stepmother folded her arms.

"I don't appreciate your tone."

My brother stared.

"Grandma wanted to see us."

She stepped closer.

"Your grandmother needs to learn that she doesn't control this household."

He didn't answer.
