But I never forgot the expression on my stepmother's face when she realized he believed I'd been careless.

Years later, my father found that signed permission slip in a folder she kept with old household records.

She had never returned it to me.

At the time, the incident seemed like a small disappointment.

Looking back, I understand how important it was.

She was learning that she could control what Dad heard, then persuade him to blame us for the consequences.

The punishments became more personal after that.

If I forgot to make my bed, I lost my bedtime story.

If I spilled juice, I had to sit alone while everyone else finished dinner.

If I asked too many questions about when Dad was coming home, she sent me upstairs.

My brother began spending more time near me.

He offered to help with homework even when he had assignments of his own.

He waited outside my classroom after school.

And when our stepmother wasn't looking, he slipped extra crackers into my backpack because he noticed that she sometimes refused to give me an afternoon snack.

We developed little signals.

If he tapped the kitchen counter twice, it meant Dad was almost home.

If he placed his hand on my shoulder, it meant I should stop arguing because our stepmother was getting angry.

If he asked whether I'd seen his red notebook, it meant he wanted to speak with me privately.

I didn't understand how unusual our behavior was.

I thought every family had secret ways of avoiding trouble.

My brother knew better.

One afternoon, he came home with a bruise on his elbow after falling during basketball practice.

Our stepmother looked at it.

Then she accused him of fighting.

He explained what happened.

She didn't believe him.

When Dad arrived, she told him my brother had become aggressive at school.

My father looked concerned.

He asked for details.

My brother explained again.

Then he showed Dad a message from the coach confirming that he'd fallen during practice.

Our stepmother laughed.

"Well, perhaps I misunderstood."

Dad accepted the explanation.

But my brother noticed something I didn't.

She wasn't embarrassed about being wrong.

She was angry that he had evidence.

That night, he began saving messages.

He kept screenshots of school schedules, confirmations from teachers, and copies of anything that contradicted what our stepmother told Dad.

At thirteen, he was building a record of our own lives.

Not because he wanted to expose her publicly.

Because he was frightened that one day her lies would become too big for us to contradict.
