He asked for the submitted paperwork to be preserved and for any pending arrangements to be stopped.

The attorney contacted the trust's professionals and the relevant parties involved in the proposed property transaction. They were informed that documents purporting to bear Dad's signature were disputed and that no unauthorized transfer should be accepted.

My grandmother was notified.

So were the people responsible for safeguarding the trust records.

I didn't understand all those calls at eight years old.

I remember only that Dad spent much of the evening speaking in a low, controlled voice while my brother and I sat beside Grandma in the living room.

Every few minutes, I looked toward the hallway.

I was afraid my stepmother would appear and tell me the adults had changed their minds.

Grandma noticed.

She moved closer.

"Sweetheart, you're not going anywhere tonight."

I swallowed.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"Your father is handling the paperwork."

I looked toward the stairs.

Then I asked, "What if she already sent it?"

Grandma took my hand.

"Paper doesn't change how much your father loves you."

I stared.

Then I whispered, "But she said he signed it."

Grandma's eyes filled.

She squeezed my fingers.

"He didn't."

I wanted to believe her.

But I was still afraid.

Because for months, adults had been telling me what was true, and the truth kept changing depending on who was speaking.

It would take much longer for me to believe that this time, the people protecting me weren't going to change their story.

Our stepmother didn't stay in the house that night.

My father arranged for the adults to separate while the immediate concerns were addressed, taking advice about the children, the residence, and the necessary legal processes. My grandmother remained with us, and Dad made sure my brother and I understood that no one was coming to take us away.

The following morning, we visited a medical professional to assess the pain from my hair being pulled and the injury near my arm.

The physical discomfort faded.

The fear took longer.

I still remember the doctor's office.

The pale walls.

The little basket of toys.

The way Dad sat beside me instead of making a business call.

The doctor spoke kindly.

She asked how I felt, examined the tender areas, and explained to Dad what follow-up might be appropriate.

Then she asked whether I felt safe going home.

I looked toward my father.

He waited.

He didn't answer for me.
