The first thing I heard when I walked into my dining room was my four-year-old daughter asking whether she'd done something bad. The second thing I noticed was the empty white tray in front of her, even though the other two children were sitting at the table eating full plates of dinner. My wife stood beside the kitchen trash can holding a small white plate, and when she saw me standing in the doorway, the expression on her face changed so quickly that I knew something was wrong. But it was what my little girl said next that made the entire room go silent.

"Daddy, am I really not your daughter?"

I stopped walking.

My briefcase slipped slightly in my hand.

For several seconds, I couldn't understand the question. My daughter was four years old, with dark curly hair tied into two little pigtails, beautiful brown eyes, and the same small dimple her mother used to have when she smiled. She was wearing a pale-lavender shirt, and her little fingers were wrapped around a plastic spoon above an empty plate.

I looked at my wife.

"What did she just say?"

My wife was thirty-eight, a beautiful Black woman with shoulder-length dark hair, a polished appearance, and the kind of controlled expression that usually made strangers believe she was the most composed person in any room. She wore a champagne-gray satin blouse and tailored black trousers. Her two children from her previous marriage sat at our dining table, one ten-year-old boy and one eight-year-old girl, both with plates full of chicken, vegetables, and mashed potatoes.

Neither child was speaking.

My wife's smile appeared suddenly.

"Oh, don't worry. She's just being dramatic."

I looked toward my daughter.

She wasn't smiling.

Her lower lip trembled.

"Daddy?"

I moved closer.

"Sweetheart, why would you ask me that?"

She looked toward my wife.

Then she whispered, "Because she said I'm not your real daughter."

My chest tightened.

I turned toward my wife.

"What?"

She laughed nervously.

"You're taking something a four-year-old said out of context."

I looked at the plate in her hand.

"Why doesn't she have dinner?"

My wife glanced toward the trash can.

"She was misbehaving."

I stared.

"What did she do?"

"She wouldn't listen."

I looked at the other children.

They immediately lowered their eyes.

My daughter shifted in her small white booster chair.

"I was hungry, Daddy."

For a moment, I couldn't speak.
