Then I noticed something else.
My daughter's plate wasn't simply empty.
There were orange streaks from carrots, a few grains of rice, and a small smear of sauce near the edge. Her spoon was still in her hand.
She'd already started eating.
I looked at my wife again.
"Did you take her food away while she was eating?"
She folded her arms.
"She needed to learn a lesson."
I felt anger rising.
"What lesson?"
My wife stepped closer and lowered her voice.
"We can discuss this privately."
"No."
She blinked.
I continued.
"We're going to address the fact that our four-year-old is sitting here hungry while everybody else has dinner."
Her expression hardened.
"You've been gone all day. You don't know what happened."
I looked toward the table.
The ten-year-old boy stared at his plate.
His younger sister sat completely still, holding her fork halfway to her mouth.
My daughter looked frightened.
I took a slow breath.
Then I knelt beside her.
"Sweetheart, look at me."
She lifted her eyes.
"You're my daughter."
Her face changed.
I continued.
"You have always been my daughter. Nothing anyone says can change that."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"Even if I'm bad?"
My heart broke.
I shook my head.
"Even when you make mistakes, sweetheart."
She stared at me.
Then she asked the question I would spend months remembering.
"Then why does she say you don't want me anymore?"
Behind me, my wife suddenly spoke.
"That's enough."
I turned.
Her face was pale.
She pointed toward my daughter.
"Stop putting words in your father's mouth."
My little girl flinched.
I stood.
"Do not speak to her like that."
My wife looked stunned.
"Excuse me?"
I looked toward the ceiling.
A small security camera was mounted near the corner where the dining room opened into the kitchen. It had been installed when we renovated the house, along with several other indoor and outdoor cameras.
I pointed toward it.
"That camera records this room."
My wife glanced upward.
Then she smiled.
"No, it doesn't."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"It's been broken for months."
I looked toward the camera again.
Then I slowly reached into my pocket.
I knew something she didn't.
The camera had never been broken.
Its visible status light had been disabled through the security settings, but the device continued recording to a separate storage system. The previous year, after our home experienced an internet outage during a storm, I'd upgraded the system so that temporary interruptions wouldn't erase local recordings.
