Then she whispered something I barely heard.

"Grandma, Daddy says I'm his real daughter."

My mother froze.

She looked toward me.

I felt my throat tighten.

My mother turned back to the child.

"Of course you are."

My daughter stared.

"Really?"

My mother's eyes filled.

"Sweetheart, I was there the day you were born."

She smiled gently.

"I held you when you were only a few hours old."

My daughter looked amazed.

"You did?"

My mother nodded.

"And your daddy was so happy he could barely stop smiling."

I covered my mouth.

My mother continued.

"You are his daughter, and nobody gets to tell you otherwise."

The little girl wrapped her arms around her grandmother's neck.

And I watched the woman who had raised me begin repairing a lie I should never have allowed to take root in my own home.

I took my mother aside after making sure the children were comfortable.

We stood in the kitchen.

I explained what I'd seen and showed her enough of the recordings to establish why I was concerned.

She watched silently.

When the video showed my wife removing my daughter's dinner, my mother's hand moved toward her mouth.

When the recording captured the statement about parentage, she closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she didn't speak.

Then she looked toward me.

"How long?"

I swallowed.

"I don't know yet."

Her expression was filled with pain.

"How long has that baby been afraid to eat?"

I stared at the floor.

"I don't know."

She took a breath.

Then she placed one hand on my arm.

"You're going to need help with this."

I nodded.

"I've called the attorney."

"Good."

I looked toward the children.

My mother followed my gaze.

Then she said, "And the older two?"

I explained what they'd told me.

Her eyes filled again.

"All three of them."

I nodded.

She looked toward the hallway.

"Those children have been living in fear of the same adult."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she turned toward me.

"Don't make them responsible for fixing this."

I looked up.

She continued.

"You're angry. You have every right to be. But they need to know that the adults will handle what happens next."

I nodded.

I knew she was right.

Then she asked something that struck me harder than I expected.

"Have you told your daughter you're sorry?"

I swallowed.

"Not properly."

My mother squeezed my arm.
