He was involved in their lives and maintained regular parenting time under his existing arrangements. He was understandably alarmed when he learned there were serious concerns about the household.

I didn't accuse the children.

I didn't tell him they were responsible for anything.

I explained that the situation required adult attention and that I wanted to make sure both children had appropriate support.

Their father arranged to spend additional time with them while the adults worked through the immediate issues.

The children were upset.

The younger girl cried when she learned she'd be staying elsewhere temporarily.

She looked toward my daughter.

"Can I still see her?"

My throat tightened.

I knelt beside her.

"I hope so, sweetheart. The adults need to make sure everybody is safe and comfortable first."

She looked down.

Then she whispered, "She didn't do anything wrong."

I felt tears rising.

"I know."

The girl looked toward her mother.

Then back at me.

"I tried to help."

I nodded.

"You did."

She began crying.

I held out my hand.

She took it.

And for a moment, I understood how much courage it had required for an eight-year-old to share food with a younger child when the adult in charge had forbidden it.

The boy stood nearby carrying his backpack.

He looked toward me.

"Are you mad at us?"

I shook my head.

"No."

He swallowed.

Then he said, "I should've told you."

I took a slow breath.

"You're ten years old. It was the adults' job to keep everyone safe, not yours."

His eyes filled.

He nodded.

Then he looked toward my daughter.

"Can I give her something?"

I smiled gently.

"Of course."

He reached into his backpack.

Then he pulled out a small plastic toy car.

It was red, with black wheels and a little silver stripe.

He handed it to my daughter.

She stared.

"For me?"

He nodded.

"You can keep it."

She smiled.

Then she hugged him.

For several seconds, the children held each other.

I turned away because I couldn't stop crying.

The younger girl joined the hug.

And I realized that even inside a household where one adult had created fear, the children had managed to preserve something kinder.

They had learned to care about one another.

I hoped the adults wouldn't destroy that too.

The financial documents revealed another part of my wife's intentions.
