Marcus displayed it.

The confrontation escalated.

Then came the shove.

The cake was thrown.

The boot descended.

And Caleb screamed.

The sound filled the courtroom.

Marcus lowered his head.

Even after months of therapy and preparation, hearing his son's voice in that moment was almost unbearable.

Thomas sat rigidly beside him.

His hands were folded.

His jaw was tight.

He did not look toward Walsh.

The prosecutor paused the video.

Then she asked the witness, Rachel Lewis, to describe what she had seen.

Rachel spoke carefully.

She explained where she had stood.

She described why she began recording.

She confirmed that she had not altered the original video.

She explained that Marcus had shown the permit before Walsh ordered the family to leave.

She described the officer throwing the cake.

Then she looked toward the jury.

"The boy started crying."

The prosecutor asked, "What did his father do?"

Rachel swallowed.

"He picked him up."

"And then?"

"He held him."

Her voice weakened.

"That's what I remember most. All those kids standing there, and his father holding him while the officer acted like he'd done something normal."

The courtroom was quiet.

Walsh's defense argued that the gathering had created uncertainty about public access and that the officer had been attempting to restore order.

The defense also argued that the videos did not capture every moment of the interaction.

Those arguments were examined.

But witnesses consistently described the family as cooperative.

The permit was valid.

No evidence established that the cake posed any safety threat.

And the footage showed the destruction occurring after Marcus had repeatedly attempted to explain the reservation.

The defense attorney questioned Marcus about his relationship to Chief Bennett.

"Your father is a senior police official, correct?"

"Yes."

"Did you contact him during the incident?"

"No."

"Did you ask him to intervene?"

"No."

"Did you expect special treatment because of your family connection?"

Marcus looked directly at the attorney.

"I expected my son to have a birthday party."

The attorney paused.

"That wasn't my question."

Marcus nodded.

"I didn't expect special treatment. I expected the permit we paid for to be respected."

The attorney asked whether Marcus had been angry with Walsh.

"Yes."

"Very angry?"

"Yes."

"Did you challenge him?"

"I asked him to explain why we had to leave."

"Did you tell him not to touch your child?"

"Yes."
