Lily smiled.

"Like Dad becoming an engineer?"

"Exactly."

"And me becoming a teacher?"

Marcus grinned.

"Especially you."

She laughed.

Then she rested her head against his shoulder again.

Marcus died peacefully at eighty-seven.

He had lived long enough to see his grandchildren grow into adults.

He had attended Lily's college graduation.

He had watched Caleb become a respected engineer and community mentor.

He had celebrated countless birthdays, holidays, and ordinary family dinners.

His final years had not been free of difficulty.

He had experienced illness.

He had endured the aches and limitations of aging.

He had missed Danielle, Thomas, and friends who died before him.

But his life had remained rich with relationships, work, laughter, and love.

At his memorial service, Caleb stood before the gathering.

He was sixty years old now.

His hair had turned silver at the temples.

His voice was steady, though his eyes were wet.

He looked toward the photograph of Marcus displayed beside the flowers.

It showed his father in the gray T-shirt he had worn at the seventh birthday party.

But the image had been taken before the officer arrived.

Marcus was smiling.

One hand rested on Caleb's shoulder.

Caleb began.

"My father spent most of his life fixing things."

A few people smiled.

"He fixed electrical systems, broken appliances, bicycles, fences, and just about anything else that stopped working."

He paused.

"He wasn't always gentle with the tools. And if you handed him the wrong screwdriver, he would definitely let you know."

Soft laughter moved through the room.

Caleb smiled.

"But the most important thing he fixed wasn't something he could repair with a wrench."

His voice weakened.

"He helped me rebuild my sense of safety after a day when I thought the world could turn against us without warning."

He looked toward his children.

"When I was seven, an officer destroyed my birthday cake. That incident became public. There were investigations, court proceedings, and changes to how the city handled accountability."

He paused.

"Those things mattered. But they were not what defined my father's life."

Caleb looked toward the photograph.

"He defined his life by showing up."

He took a breath.

"He showed up when I was scared. He showed up when I failed a test. He showed up when I graduated. He showed up when I became a father. And he showed up for my children in ways I will never forget."

The room was silent.

Caleb continued.

"For a long time, people called him the father who stood up to an abusive officer."

He shook his head gently.

"That's not how I remember him."

His voice broke.

"I remember him as the father who stayed."

He lowered his notes.

"And that was enough."

After the memorial, Lily approached her father.

She held a small cardboard box.

"Dad?"

Caleb turned.
