Marcus stared.
"The Superman costume?"
Caleb smiled.
"Yeah."
"You're taking that to college?"
"Not to wear."
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
"Then why?"
Caleb unfolded the red cape.
"I'm keeping it."
Marcus sat on the edge of the bed.
"Can I ask why?"
Caleb looked at the emblem.
"Because it reminds me of something."
Marcus waited.
Caleb smiled.
"Heroes aren't always the people wearing uniforms."
Marcus felt a familiar tightness in his chest.
Caleb continued.
"Sometimes they're the people who keep you safe when somebody else forgets what their job is."
Marcus shook his head.
"You're going to make me cry in a dorm room."
Caleb laughed.
"That's okay, Dad."
They hugged.
And when Marcus finally drove home, he cried in the truck.
Not because his son was leaving.
Because the little boy who once believed a police officer could destroy his entire world had grown into a young man who understood that cruelty did not have to define his future.
Caleb graduated from college four years later.
He went to work for an aerospace engineering company.
He helped design guidance systems for small research satellites.
He married a woman he had met during graduate school.
They bought a modest house near a large park.
Years later, when their first child was born, Marcus became a grandfather.
He held the baby in his arms and stared at the tiny face.
Caleb stood beside him.
"How does it feel?"
Marcus smiled.
"Like I just got promoted."
Caleb laughed.
"Grandpa Marcus."
"Has a nice ring to it."
The baby opened her eyes.
Marcus looked down.
"Hello, sweetheart."
Caleb sat beside him.
"Do you remember when I was seven?"
Marcus glanced at him.
"Of course."
Caleb smiled faintly.
"I used to think birthdays were supposed to be perfect."
Marcus looked at the sleeping baby.
"Most parents wish they could make them that way."
Caleb nodded.
Then he said, "I know now that you can't protect your kids from every bad thing."
Marcus smiled sadly.
"No."
"But you can make sure they don't have to face it alone."
Marcus looked at his son.
For a moment, he saw the little boy in the Superman costume again.
