For several seconds, she appeared unable to believe that official records might contradict something she had confidently announced in front of her neighbors.

Then she stepped forward.

"I don't care what that says."

The younger officer blinked.

"Ma'am—"

"I know this neighborhood!"

She pointed toward the mansion.

"I've lived here for years. My family has connections all over this city. We know who belongs here."

The Black man's expression changed slightly.

Not with fear.

Not with anger.

With a tired recognition of what she had finally said openly.

The woman continued.

"My father owns one of the biggest technology companies in the state. He practically built half the security systems these communities use."

Several wealthy neighbors stood near the entrance of the property, watching.

An older woman held a smartphone discreetly near her chest.

A middle-aged man in a blue suit shifted uncomfortably.

Another woman looked toward the police officers, then toward the detained homeowner.

No one was laughing now.

The blonde woman straightened.

"Do you understand who you're dealing with?"

The Black man watched her for a moment.

Then asked quietly, "Which technology company?"

She stared.

"What?"

"Your father's company."

Her expression became smug again.

"Asterion Security Technologies."

He nodded once.

"I see."

She smiled triumphantly.

"Exactly."

Then she stepped closer, lowering her voice into something deliberately cruel.

"My family built that company from nothing. We own the security contracts for some of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the country."

She glanced toward the Ferrari.

"And when I tell people you're a problem, you'll discover how difficult life can become."

The Black man looked at the older officer.

"Before this goes any further, I would appreciate having the handcuffs removed now that you've verified the registration."

The younger officer stepped forward.

"I agree. There's no basis to continue the vehicle-theft detention."

The arresting officer hesitated.

Then reached for his keys.

But the blonde woman was not finished.

"You think you're untouchable because you have some expensive car?"

The man said nothing.

She raised her voice.

"My father can make one phone call and have your access to this entire community revoked."

The Black man turned toward her.

He studied her carefully.

Then asked a question in the same calm voice he had used throughout the confrontation.

"Have you spoken with your father this morning?"

She frowned.

"Excuse me?"

"Your father. Have you spoken with him today?"

Her eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

"Because I think there's something he hasn't told you."

She laughed.

"Oh, really?"

The Black man looked toward the mansion.

Then back at her.

"Your family no longer controls Asterion Security Technologies."

Her smile froze.

For a moment, the only sound was the distant rustling of leaves.

Then she whispered, "What?"

He continued.

"My investment group completed an acquisition of fifty-one percent of the company's voting shares at eight forty-five this morning."
