He shook his head.

"No."

"Why not?"

He considered.

"Because my investment wasn't relevant to whether I owned the car."

She smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

He looked toward her.

She continued.

"You shouldn't have to buy a company to persuade somebody that a Black man can own a beautiful house."

He swallowed.

"I know."

She reached for his hand.

"Remember that when everyone starts celebrating the twist."

He frowned.

"What twist?"

His mother gave him a tired smile.

"The story where the wealthy stranger turns out to be even more powerful than the people humiliating him."

She shook her head.

"People love that kind of story."

He nodded.

She continued.

"But the problem wasn't that they picked on a man who could buy their company."

Her voice softened.

"The problem was that they thought it was acceptable to treat somebody that way at all."

The businessman looked down.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

"You're right."

His mother smiled.

"I know."

He laughed softly.

She squeezed his hand.

"Now, tell me what you're going to do."

He explained the independent corporate review.

The police complaint.

The preservation requests.

The potential civil claim.

And his intention to examine the security platform's reporting practices.

His mother listened.

Then asked about the company's employees.

He told her they were being informed of the acquisition and the upcoming audit.

She nodded.

"Good."

He looked toward her.

Then smiled faintly.

"You know, most mothers would've asked why I didn't call them."

She raised an eyebrow.

"I am asking."

He laughed.

She pointed toward his phone.

"You should've called."

"Yes, ma'am."

She smiled.

Then reached into her bag.

"I brought something."

He looked surprised.

She removed a small framed photograph.

His father.

Standing beside the old repair shop.

One hand resting on a car engine.

His work shirt stained with grease.

His smile broad and proud.

The businessman went still.

His mother looked toward him.

"Found it while cleaning."

He accepted the frame carefully.

For several seconds, he stared.

Then his mother said, "I thought it belonged here."

His eyes filled.

He nodded.

"Thank you."

She looked toward the Ferrari outside.

Then back at the photograph.

"Your father would've loved seeing that car."

The businessman smiled through tears.

"I know."

She continued.

"But he would've cared more about how you handled what happened yesterday."

He looked toward her.

Then nodded.

"I know that too."

At Asterion Security Technologies, the atmosphere had changed almost overnight.

The acquisition itself was already a major event.

Employees had been expecting some form of financial restructuring.

Rumors circulated for months.

Some believed the founder would sell a minority interest.

Others expected layoffs.

A few thought the company might break into smaller businesses.
