"We need an emergency board meeting."
The lawyer agreed.
"And we need to preserve all the relevant financial records."
Nora nodded.
Then looked toward the photograph of her grandchildren on the desk.
She thought about the ordinary families who paid their assessments believing the association would use their money responsibly.
The matter was no longer simply about Luke's pool.
It concerned the trust of every homeowner in Cedar Ridge Estates.
The emergency board meeting began at seven on a Thursday evening.
Celeste arrived wearing a tailored cream-colored suit and expensive earrings. Her blonde hair was perfectly styled, and she carried the same leather folder she'd used for months to deliver HOA notices.
At first, she behaved as though the meeting were an inconvenience.
She smiled at the directors.
Complimented the refreshments.
And suggested they finish quickly because she had another engagement.
Nora didn't smile.
The association's attorney sat at the end of the table with several carefully organized files.
A representative from the management company attended as well.
The attorney explained that the meeting concerned potential conflicts of interest, unauthorized expenditures, property-access claims, and the fountain's connection to privately owned equipment.
Celeste leaned backward.
"This has become absurd."
Nora looked toward her.
"Then perhaps you can explain the documents."
The president crossed her arms.
"Which documents?"
"The historical pool agreement, the wellness registration account, and the fountain-renovation authorizations."
Celeste's expression tightened.
She began with the pool.
She claimed Samuel Whitaker had intended the property to remain available for community recreation.
The attorney asked whether she possessed a valid recorded instrument establishing that right against Luke's current ownership.
She hesitated.
Then referred to the historical extension.
The attorney explained that the extension's validity was disputed and that the available records didn't establish the authority she claimed.
Celeste immediately accused Luke of manipulating the investigation.
Nora interrupted.
"Luke didn't prepare these invoices, Celeste."
The president turned toward her.
Nora continued.
"His name doesn't appear on the wellness registration account. Yours does."
For several seconds, the room became silent.
Celeste insisted that Harrow Lifestyle Events provided legitimate event-planning services.
She said the company handled scheduling, decorations, refreshments, and participant communication.
Some of that was true.
The business had performed actual work.
But Nora asked why the association hadn't approved the financial arrangement through the required process.
