The first formal notice arrived the following Monday.

It was printed on association letterhead and signed by Victoria.

The subject read:

Notice of Violation — Exterior Recreational Activity and Community Harmony.

Anthony stared.

The letter alleged that his pool activities created excessive noise and visual disruption inconsistent with neighborhood standards.

It warned that additional violations could result in fines after the appropriate process.

He read the letter again.

Then laughed bitterly.

He lived alone.

Most weekdays, he worked until late afternoon.

And he rarely hosted more than two or three friends.

The loudest activity near his pool had come from people Victoria invited without his permission.

Anthony checked the dates listed in the notice.

Two corresponded to times when he'd been at work.

He opened his phone.

The messages he'd sent Victoria on those dates were still there.

He'd asked her to stop allowing people into his backyard.

Now those incidents were being used as complaints against him.

Anthony sat quietly for several minutes.

Then began organizing his records.

He created folders for dates, correspondence, photographs, and notes.

He saved the HOA notice.

The management company's confirmation that his pool was private.

And his messages requesting that the unauthorized visits stop.

He didn't know how far Victoria intended to push the matter.

But his grandfather had taught him that records mattered.

And Anthony intended to keep them.

Anthony's first attempt to resolve the dispute through the HOA board went badly.

The meeting took place on a Tuesday evening in the Maplewood Heights clubhouse. A long folding table stood at the front of the room, with five board members seated behind nameplates and folders. About fifteen homeowners attended, most of them concerned with landscaping contracts, parking questions, or the upcoming neighborhood summer celebration.

Victoria sat in the center.

She wore a coral blazer and a pearl necklace, her blonde hair arranged in carefully styled waves. A large leather folder rested in front of her, and she spoke with the confident authority of someone accustomed to controlling meetings.

When Anthony was invited to address the board, he stood near the back.

He wore a clean navy polo shirt and khaki trousers.

He explained that residents had repeatedly entered his backyard without permission, that Victoria had described his private pool as a shared facility, and that he'd received a violation notice based on noise occurring during those unauthorized visits.

Victoria interrupted almost immediately.

"That's a highly selective interpretation."

Anthony turned toward her.

"I'm describing what happened."

She gave a thin smile.

"You're describing it from your perspective."
