The lights came on against a dark blue sky.

Families filled the stands.

Students painted their faces.

The marching band played.

Jordan sat near the sideline with the equipment crew.

His mother sat in the stands.

Denise was beside her.

Victoria Whitmore was three rows behind them.

She had become an unexpected volunteer with the school's accessibility committee.

She now spent several weekends helping review event entrances, parking access, and seating arrangements.

Nobody forgot what she had done.

But people noticed what she did afterward.

That mattered.

During the second quarter, Westbrook fell behind.

By halftime, they were down fourteen points.

Malik came off the field frustrated.

Jordan handed him water.

“You're thinking too much.”

Malik frowned.

“You sound like Coach.”

“Coach stole it from me.”

Malik laughed.

“What do you think?”

Jordan looked at the scoreboard.

“I think we're down fourteen.”

“Helpful.”

“And I think there's a whole second half.”

Malik nodded.

Jordan held out his fist.

Malik bumped it.

“See you out there.”

The second half changed everything.

Westbrook scored.

Then scored again.

The opposing team answered.

With two minutes left, Westbrook trailed by three.

The final drive began at their own thirty-yard line.

The stadium shook.

Jordan stood beside the bench.

Coach Ellis shouted instructions.

Malik took the field.

The quarterback completed a pass.

Then another.

Twenty yards.

Ten yards.

Five.

Thirty seconds.

Westbrook had one timeout.

The clock ran.

Twenty seconds.

The team lined up.

Jordan watched.

The snap came.

Malik broke through the defensive line.

The quarterback handed him the ball.

Malik disappeared behind two blockers.

Then emerged.

Touchdown.

The stadium exploded.

Jordan screamed.

His mother stood.

Denise hugged her.

Coach Ellis threw both hands into the air.

Malik ran toward the sideline.

He stopped directly in front of Jordan.

For a moment, they simply stared at each other.

Then Malik pointed toward the field.

“Your turn.”

Jordan laughed.

“My turn for what?”

“To celebrate.”

Jordan shook his head.

“I don't run.”

Malik grinned.

“Neither do we.”

Jordan laughed harder.

The team gathered around him.

Someone draped a football jersey over his shoulders.

Someone else put a championship cap on his head.

The players shouted.

The stadium lights burned above them.

For a moment, Jordan closed his eyes.

He remembered the bus.

He remembered the parking lot.

He remembered the fear.

He remembered Victoria pointing at him.

He remembered Denise standing behind him.

He remembered Mr. Franklin refusing to close the doors.

He remembered Malik stepping off the bus.

He remembered the sentence.

He doesn’t ride.

None of us do.

Jordan opened his eyes.

The championship trophy was being passed from player to player.
