Thump.
Thump.
The laughter inside the bus stopped.
A shadow appeared in the doorway.
Then another.
Then another.
Several large teenage football players stood behind Victoria.
They were wearing matching red-and-black uniforms.
Shoulder pads.
Practice pants.
Team jackets.
Some still wore helmets.
Others had helmets tucked under their arms.
The doorway suddenly seemed much smaller.
Victoria turned.
Her expression changed.
The tallest player stood at the center.
Malik Thompson.
Sixteen years old.
Six foot three.
Starting defensive end.
Team captain.
He had been Jordan's closest friend since middle school.
Malik stepped forward.
He didn't yell.
He didn't shove Victoria.
He simply looked at her.
Then he removed his helmet.
The bus became completely silent.
Malik's eyes moved from Victoria to Jordan.
Then to the wheelchair.
Then back to Victoria.
He stepped onto the ramp.
Victoria instinctively moved backward.
Malik stopped three feet away.
He looked at her.
“He doesn't ride,” Malik said, “none of us do.”
Jordan's eyes widened.
Victoria stared at him.
The other players filled the doorway behind him.
One by one, they stepped forward.
Not aggressively.
Not threateningly.
Simply standing together.
Victoria suddenly looked very small.
Malik continued.
“He's our teammate.”
Victoria shook her head.
“That's not what I said.”
“You blocked him.”
“I was talking to the driver.”
“You were standing on his ramp.”
“He was delaying the bus.”
Malik looked at Jordan.
Then back at her.
“You made him feel like he was the delay.”
Victoria's lips tightened.
“That wasn't my intention.”
Malik shook his head.
“Intentions don't erase what you did.”
The bus remained silent.
Then another player spoke.
“Move.”
Victoria looked around.
The entire team was watching her.
No one was smiling.
No one was shouting.
That made it worse.
Because they weren't acting like angry teenagers.
They were standing like a team.
Coach Ellis appeared behind them.
His expression was hard.
“Victoria.”
She turned.
“Coach.”
“What are you doing?”
“I was trying to keep the bus on schedule.”
“No.”
Coach Ellis stepped closer.
“You were blocking one of my students.”
“He was delaying everyone.”
“He was boarding.”
Victoria looked toward Jordan.
“He requires extra time.”
Coach Ellis nodded.
“Yes.”
“So why should everyone else wait?”
“Because he's one of us.”
Victoria shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.”
Coach Ellis's voice became quiet.
“No.”
He looked at Jordan.
“This is what inclusion looks like.”
Victoria looked around.
