“You're all making this bigger than it is.”
Coach Ellis shook his head.
“You made it big when you stood on that ramp.”
Nobody spoke.
Jordan looked down.
He wasn't sure what he was feeling.
Anger.
Embarrassment.
Relief.
All of it at once.
Malik stepped beside him.
“You good?”
Jordan nodded.
“Yeah.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
Malik smiled.
“Then let's go.”
Jordan rolled forward.
Victoria moved aside.
The ramp was clear.
Jordan climbed onto the bus.
The entire team moved to make room.
One player held the handrail.
Another cleared a bag from the aisle.
Someone moved a helmet.
Jordan reached the top.
Malik reached down.
Jordan looked at his hand.
Then took it.
Malik helped stabilize the chair.
“Got you.”
Jordan smiled.
“Always.”
He rolled toward his usual spot.
The players made room.
Denise climbed aboard.
Coach Ellis followed.
Victoria remained outside.
Mr. Franklin looked at her.
“Ma'am, we're leaving.”
Victoria stared at the bus.
She seemed unable to process what had happened.
The doors closed.
The bus began moving.
Jordan looked out the window.
Victoria stood on the sidewalk.
Their eyes met.
Jordan didn't smile.
He didn't wave.
He simply looked at her.
Then the bus turned the corner.
The confrontation should have ended there.
It didn't.
Because someone had recorded it.
By the time the bus reached the athletic complex, the video had already been uploaded.
The first clip lasted twenty-eight seconds.
It showed Victoria blocking the ramp.
It showed Jordan looking up.
It showed Malik stepping forward.
And it ended with his sentence.
“He doesn't ride, none of us do.”
The video spread.
Fast.
Very fast.
Students shared it.
Parents shared it.
Teachers shared it.
By dinner, local community groups were discussing it.
By midnight, the clip had been viewed more than a million times.
But Jordan didn't know.
He was at home.
Sitting at his kitchen table.
Eating dinner with his mother.
His mother, Renee Williams, had noticed he was unusually quiet.
“How was practice?”
Jordan shrugged.
“Fine.”
“Just fine?”
“Yeah.”
Renee studied him.
“Something happened.”
Jordan kept eating.
“No.”
“Jordan.”
He looked up.
“What?”
“I'm your mother.”
He sighed.
“Someone stopped me from getting on the bus.”
Renee's expression changed.
“Who?”
“Some HOA woman.”
“What did she say?”
Jordan hesitated.
