“Captain.”
Halden looked toward 1A.
Then smiled faintly.
“I checked the manifest twice.”
Darius almost laughed.
“Good.”
Halden’s smile disappeared into something more serious.
“I didn't know you were on this flight.”
“I know.”
A pause.
Halden said:
“I’m glad.”
“Why?”
“Because if I knew, I’d spend the whole flight wondering whether I was performing.”
That answer impressed Darius.
He nodded.
“Then forget I’m here.”
“I’ll try.”
Halden returned toward cockpit.
Then stopped.
Turned.
“Darius.”
It was the first time he used his first name.
Darius looked.
Halden said:
“I had an incident last month.”
Darius’s stomach tightened.
“What kind?”
“A passenger was in the wrong premium seat.”
Darius waited.
Halden continued.
“I assumed he had taken it intentionally.”
“I started to tell the purser to move him.”
“Then I stopped.”
“Checked.”
“And?”
“The gate had printed his pass wrong.”
Darius said nothing.
Halden smiled without humor.
“Not exactly heroic.”
“No.”
“That’s the point, I guess.”
“Yes.”
Halden went back to cockpit.
Darius looked toward the young man in 2C.
Nobody knew the conversation mattered.
Good.
Real change often has no audience.
Flight 418 had become part of Northstar folklore by then.
Training departments wanted to use the video.
Darius initially refused.
Then agreed under conditions.
The module did not begin with the identity reveal.
It paused before the radio call.
Trainees watched Halden challenge Darius.
Then the video stopped.
The instructor asked:
“What information do you have?”
Not:
What did the captain do wrong?
Not yet.
What information?
Passenger has valid boarding pass.
Manifest confirmation from flight attendant.
Internal note suggesting possible executive inspection.
Captain expects different passenger.
No safety issue.
What should happen next?
Verify.
Pause.
Ask.
Do not escalate.
Then the module showed the radio call.
Instructor asked:
“What changes?”
Trainees often answered:
“Now we know passenger is CEO.”
Instructor said:
“What should change about his right to respectful verification?”
Nothing.
Exactly.
Then trainees watched remainder.
It was uncomfortable.
Useful.
