“Sit down.”

“You’re taking my property.”

“I’m removing your bag.”

“For what reason?”

Halden pushed it into the aisle with his foot.

The bag slid several feet across the carpet.

It did not burst.

Nothing broke.

But Darius felt something inside himself become still.

Evelyn whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Halden pointed again.

“Security can verify you outside.”

Darius looked at the bag.

Then at the captain.

He wanted to say his title.

He wanted to watch Halden’s face change.

That desire disgusted him.

Because it would mean the lesson was:

Respect me because I outrank you.

No.

He wanted the captain to have treated any passenger differently.

The radio on Evelyn’s belt crackled.

She glanced down.

Halden was still speaking.

“You can cooperate or—”

Another radio came alive from the galley.

Then Halden’s own shoulder unit.

A burst of static.

Operations control.

“Flight 418, hold departure. Confirm status of executive inspection passenger.”

Halden stopped.

Evelyn looked at Darius.

Her eyes widened.

The radio continued.

“Flight 418, confirm CEO Darius Grant seated in 1A.”

Nobody moved.

Halden’s face seemed to lose color from the center outward.

The older passenger in 1C turned fully toward Darius.

The Asian woman across the aisle lowered her newspaper into her lap.

Evelyn’s lips parted.

Halden looked at Darius.

Then the boarding pass.

Then the bag on the floor.

The radio crackled again.

“Flight 418, operations requesting immediate confirmation. CEO inspection passenger should be in seat 1A.”

Evelyn picked up her handset.

Her hand shook.

“This is Flight 418 forward cabin.”

She looked at Darius.

Then swallowed.

“Confirmed.”

A pause.

“Mr. Grant is aboard.”

Another pause.

Evelyn listened.

Her eyes moved toward Halden.

“Yes.”

“He is in 1A.”

The cabin became so quiet Darius could hear the faint hum of the seat electronics.

Halden’s hand dropped from the seatback.

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Darius walked into the aisle.

Not toward him.

Toward his bag.

He bent down, picked it up, brushed an invisible speck from the leather, and returned it beside his seat.

Halden finally spoke.

“Mr. Grant.”

Darius sat.

“No.”

The captain stopped.

Darius looked up.

“Do not change your tone because operations gave you my title.”

Halden’s face tightened.

“Sir, there has clearly been a misunderstanding.”

“No.”

“It was based on an internal seat restriction.”

“No.”

“I was acting on information—”

“You threw a valid boarding pass onto the table.”

Halden looked toward passengers.

Darius continued.

“You kicked my bag into the aisle.”
