The woman had entered less than twelve minutes earlier.
Twelve minutes.
That was all it had taken.
Twelve minutes for the dealership to show her exactly what the reports had failed to explain.
The sales director lifted the paper again.
“This doesn’t mean anything.”
“It will if you finish reading.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You think walking in here dressed like you’re on your way to some event makes you special?”
“No.”
She adjusted the small clutch in her left hand.
“I think the authorization makes the transaction very simple.”
The director laughed.
“You don’t even know what that vehicle costs.”
“I do.”
“Then tell me.”
She gave him the number.
Correctly.
Not the advertised price.
The actual pre-delivery figure, including the optional executive package that had not yet been published online.
The laughter stopped for a moment.
One salesman looked toward another.
The director noticed.
He became irritated.
“How did you get that?”
“Read the page.”
Again.
The same request.
That should have been easy.
Instead, it became a challenge.
His challenge.
His desk.
His showroom.
His employees.
His authority.
He looked down at the document.
Then toward her.
Something about her calmness made him feel as though she were evaluating him rather than asking him for service.
He hated that feeling.
So he did what insecure men in powerful positions often did.
He turned humiliation into performance.
The director reached into the drawer beside him.
The woman watched.
He removed a silver lighter.
One young salesman frowned.
“Sir?”
The director ignored him.
He flicked the lighter.
A small flame appeared.
The Black woman did not move.
He held the corner of the authorization above it.
The paper darkened.
Then caught.
One employee covered her mouth.
The director smiled.
“Here’s my authorization.”
He let the flame eat through the corner.
The Black woman’s expression changed for the first time.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
She looked almost tired.
The director noticed and mistook it for surrender.
He dropped the burning page into a shallow metal tray on the desk.
A curl of gray smoke rose.
The paper blackened.
