The sales director leaned back.
“There.”
Then he gestured toward the entrance.
“You can go.”
Silence.
The Black woman looked down at the burning document.
Then back at him.
“You should have read who owned the company on that page.”
The director smiled.
“You?”
A few employees laughed again.
She closed her clutch.
“No.”
Then:
“The company that owns you.”
The director stared.
Before he could answer, the glass doors at the far end of the showroom opened.
A man in his late fifties entered quickly, still carrying a leather folder under one arm.
He wore the expression of someone who had been moving too fast for several blocks.
He looked around.
Saw the Black woman.
Stopped.
Every trace of urgency shifted into alarm.
He walked directly toward her.
The sales director stood halfway.
“Sir, I was just handling—”
The arriving executive ignored him.
He reached the woman.
“Chairwoman.”
The entire showroom went silent.
The director’s face changed.
The executive lowered his voice.
“I’ve been trying to reach you. The acquisition closed six minutes ago.”
No one laughed.
The Black woman looked toward the smoking tray.
The executive followed her gaze.
His face drained.
“What happened?”
She answered without looking away from the director.
“He didn’t finish reading the authorization.”
The director stood completely now.
“Acquisition?”
The Black woman finally looked at him.
“Yes.”
The executive opened the leather folder.
“The final wire cleared.”
He turned one page.
“Ownership transfer is effective immediately.”
The director stared between them.
“No.”
The executive stopped.
“What?”
“No.”
The word escaped before he could control it.
“This dealership isn’t for sale.”
The Black woman’s expression remained calm.
“It was.”
The director looked toward the executive.
“You told us negotiations were preliminary.”
“They were.”
“Until this morning.”
The executive placed the folder on the desk.
The director looked at the burned paper.
Then at the Black woman.
For the first time, he understood what he had destroyed.
Not a request to purchase a car.
A purchase authorization issued by the private investment group acquiring the dealership.
The vehicle transaction had been incidental.
A test.
He had failed it before anyone told him there was an exam.
